Taxis amb caixa negraCabs with a black box

Encara que Taiwan és un país extremadament segur (en especial quan es compara amb certes zones de Barcelona…) hi ha una obsessió a tot arreu amb la seguretat (valles amb protecció, barres a les finestres, etc.) i amb les càmeres de seguretat en particular (per TOT arreu).

L’últim gadget en temes de seguretat és l’anomenada «càmera amb caixa negra» pels cotxes. Tot va començar amb els taxis però ara hi ha molts cotxes particulars que també porten aquestes càmeres instal·lades. Què és doncs una «camera amb caixa negra»? Alguna cosa com això:

Els models més complerts porten dues càmeres (dintre i fora, o dues a fora davant/darrere), un angle de visió de fins a 140º, gravació en targetes de memòria SD, visió nocturna, vídeo en alta resolució, GPS integrat i software especialitzat pel PC. Simplement impressionant.

Hi ha molta varietat de models i preus. Podeu donar un cop d’ull a aquesta web de Taiwan. Els preus arrenquen en 1000 TWD (uns 25 Euros al canvi actual).

Així doncs… de què serveixen aquestes càmeres?

• Protegir als conductors de possibles robatoris o conducta inapropiada dels passatgers. No crec que faci massa falta a Taiwan però de ben segur pot ser útil a altres parts del món
• Vigilar com condueix el taxista i els cotxes del seu voltant. Qualsevol pot trobar-se involucrat en un accident i tenir una gravació del què ha passat pot ser molt útil.

El major problema és la privacitat, en especial quan es grava a l’interior del vehicle. Encara no he vist cap taxi que indiqui (amb alguna engaxina o avís) que a l’interior s’està gravant. Suposo que és qüestió de temps fins que algú es queixi prou.

Un efecte col·lateral de totes aquestes càmeres és que els canals de notícies van plens d’exemples de mala conducció i accidents. Els resulta molt fàcil tenir imatges de quasi qualsevol cosa ja que sempre hi ha alguna càmera pels voltants. En podeu veure alguns exemples.

Aquest video és particularment interessant ja que podeu veure com els taiwanesos (i xinesos en general) es comporten desrpés d’un accident:

• No tenen cap pressa o demostren interès en ajudar a la persona que ha patit l’accident. Aquesta és una diferència cultural molt important amb occident: en general dins la cultura xinesa tu només et preocupes de la gent del teu cercle (familiars i amics), la resta de la gent (aquells a qui no coneixes) es poden ignorar per complet (mentre no et molestin a tu mateix o la gent del teu cercle)
• Un segon punt important és que a Taiwan s’ha d’esperar que arribi la policia al lloc dels fets i no es pot tocar res (a Espanya normalment apartem el cotxe per deixar passar el trànsit)


Although Taiwan is an extremely safe country (specially when compared to some areas of Barcelona), they have an obsession with security (fences, blocked windows, etc.) and security cameras in particular (EVERYWHERE).


The latest addition to the mix is the so called «black box» camera or DVR for cars. It all started with the taxis and now you can see and more regular cars mounting a camera on the dashboard. What is this «black box» camera then? Something like that:



The most advanced models feature double camera (outside and inside), a very wide angle (up to 140º), recording on SD cards, night vision, HD video, built-in GPS and specialized software for the PC. Just amazing stuff.

So… what are these cameras for?

• Protect drivers, prevent robberies and monitor passengers behavior. I doubt this is needed in Taiwan but very useful in other parts of the world
• Monitor taxi driver and other drivers behavior. Taxi drivers can be involved in accidents or almost accidents. Recording everything makes it a lot clearer what happened.

The major concern is obviously about privacy, specially when the inside of the vehicle is recorded. I have not seen any sign on the taxis indicating if they are recording the passengers but I assume this is just a matter of time (basically until someone complains hard enough about it).

A side effect of all these cameras is that the news channels in Taiwan are now full of bad/dangerous driving behaviors or even accidents as they have footage for almost everything (there is always a camera nearby). See few examples below.

This is particularly interesting video because you see how Chinese behave with accidents,

• They DO NOT rush to help or even worry too much about the injured person. This is an important cultural difference with Western cultures: in general in Chinese culture you only care about people from your own circle (family, friends, etc.)… the rest of the people (you don’t know them) are almost non-existent (as long as they do not create problems to you or people in your circle)
• A second important reason is that you need to wait for the police to come and you are not allowed to touch anything (in Spain usually you take your car out of the middle of the road)
