El Barça i la serendipitatBarça and serendipity

Fa un parell de caps de setmana vam anar a veure el partit del Madrid-Barça, de la lliga.

A Taiwan en general el futbol no és gaire popular, prefereixen el beisbol, però a Taipei hi ha alguns locals on retransmeten tot tipus de partits i a qualsevol hora (i fins  tot emetran en directe el casament reial anglès!). És el cas del Brass Monkey, un bar on hi acostuma anar la comunitat d’expatriats. Nosaltres no som gaire futboleros però vam aprofitar l’ocasió per trobar-nos amb uns quants catalans (el Joaquim), i algun madrileny, per fer pinya tots plegats, i així fer una mica de vida social amb els quatre catalans de per aquí.

La nostra sorpresa va ser quan a les 4 de la matinada, hora local, quan començava el partit, el bar estava ple! Hi havia més taiwanesos que estrangers i encara més sorprenent, la majoria eren del Madrid!

Bé, la resta … ja sabeu com va acabar :)

Amb tot això, per casualitat vam conèixer un parell de catalans més que estaven de «visita» per allà. No se sent gaire parlar català per aquí, així que a la mínima ens crida l’atenció. Bé, i la camiseta de la Fura del Baus també els va delatar ;)

I així vam conèixer l’Emili i en Pep, tripulants del Rainbow Warrior del Greenpeace. Havien de participar en una campanya en contra de la caça de balenes al Japó, però la campanya es va cancel·lar quan va haver-hi el terratrèmol. De manera que van allargar la seva estada a Taiwan i ja feia quasi un mes que el vaixell estava amarrat al port de Keelung, al nord de Taipei, esperant la propera sortida. Ells NO són activistes, sinó que formen part dels 15 membres de la tripulacó, és a dir que s’encarreguen de moure el vaixell i tot el manteniment.

I entre gol i gol ens van anar explicant la seva feina, les seves aventures i com van arribar fins aquí. Val a que dir que va ser més interessant poder parlar amb ells que veure el partit.

Aprofitant que encara es quedaven uns dies, en Joaquim i jo els vam anar a veure a Keelung. Allà ens van fer una visita personalitzada i vam poder descobrir les interioritats del vaixell, la seva història i conèixer la resta de la tripulació.

El 21 d’abril, van marxar cap a Fukushima a prendre mostres de l’aigua del mar i comprovar els nivells de radiació. Podeu veure més informació aquí i aquí.

A couple of weeks ago, we went to watch the La Liga match Madrid-Barça.

In Taiwan football is not very popular in general, they prefer baseball, but in Taipei there are some pubs that broadcast all kind of sports at any time (they will even broadcast the English royal wedding!). One of them is the Brass Monkey, where many expats go frequently. We are not great fans of football but it was a good excuse to meet some other Catalan friends and some from Madrid, to watch all together the match and cheer our teams up.

It was a great surprise when at the beginning of the match (4am local time) the pub was really packed! There were more Taiwanese than foreigners and even more amazing, most of them were supporters of Real Madrid!

By chance, we met two other Catalans who came to “visit” Taiwan. It is not very often that we can hear people speaking in Catalan, so it was easy to recognize them.

And this is how we met Emili and Pep, members of the crew of the Rainbow Warrior from Greenpeace. They were suposed to start a campaing against the fishing of whales in Japan when the earthquake hit Japan and the campaing was cancelled.  The boat reached Keelung harbour (north of Taiwan) almost a month ago, and they were still waiting to leave to their next destination. They are NOT activists but members of the crew who take care of the boat and all its maintenance.

During the match they explained us their job, their adventures and how did they get here. I have to say that it was more interesting to talk with them than the match.

Their next destination was Japan but due to current circumstances they had to stay longer in Taiwan. So Joaquim and I couldn’t miss this opportunity and went to Keelung to see the boat and visit them. There we had a guided tour around the boat and we could discover the inner world of the Rainbow Warrior as well as the rest of the crew.

On April 21st they head for Fukushima to conduct contaminations tests of the water in that area.  You can check more information here.
