Jo havia de tornar a Europa per algunes reunions i l’Anna just havia acabat el 3r trimestre de xinès, de tal manera que ens vam organitzar per passar quasi 3 setmanes a Barcelona. Jo ja vaig tornar un cap de setmana al Maig, però per l’Anna era important sortir una mica de Taiwan/Asia després d’haver celebrat els 9 mesos aquí.

La millor manera de descriure aquest viatge és com un viatge epicuri :)

Epicur (341 AC – 270 AC), era un filòsof de l’antiga grècia i fundador de l’Epicureisme. Pocs dels seus textes han arribat als nostres dies i la seva doctrina ha estat sovint confosa amb una vida luxuriosa i sensual (aquesta confusió ha estat promoguda pels Cristians des de bon principi). No us avorriré amb els detalls però he estat llegint sobre el tema des de fa un any i ha resultat una doctrina inspiradora i molt pràctica en certs moments de la vida.

Un dels elements clau de l’Epicureisme és que els amics (i la família per extensió) són la major font de felicitat, considerant sobretot que els pots veure de manera regular i tant com sigui possible. De fet ell defensà el fet de viure amb els amics o molt aprop dels amics. A més a més també indicà que mai s’ha de menjar sol i que els menjars han de ser lleugers i saludables per obtenir la combinació perfecta.

Com que de fet en el tema de viure prop dels amics/família no ho estem fent gaire bé, vam aplicar-nos a seguir els seus consells durant la visita i va invertir el màxim de temps possible en menjar/beure (amb moderació) amb amics i familia. La veritat és que no vam parar, anant a munt i avall per intentar veure a tothom. Perdó que no tothom surt a les fotos!

Ens temiem que hauriem de respondre un munt de preguntes detallades sobre la nosta vida a Taipei i Asia però de fer va ser quasi el contrari i va ser sobretot l’Anna i jo mateix qui no va parar de fer preguntes sobre la vida dels amics.

Amb aquest blog, el Facebook i algunes videoconferències que hem anat fent de tant en tant, la gent ens va dir més d’un cop: «És com si no haguessiu marxat» (encara he d’acabar de decidir si això és pot considerar una cosa bona o dolenta)

Barcelona amb ulls asiàtics

Tornar a casa amb un nous ulls asiàtics et permet tenir una perspectiva molt particular.

Vam fer les fotos com turistes per l’emoció de tornar a estar «a casa» i pel fet de voler ensenyar a l’altre costat del món allò del què n’estem tant satisfets com el clima, els paisatges únics, el menjar… i en definitiva fer tot allò que no tenim a Taiwan. Vam disfrutar d’aquelles coses que vivint a Barcelona, potser ni ens adonem.

Tot i conèixer la ciutat perfectament, Barcelona ens va sorprendre la diversitat cultural, la barreja de cares i els pocs xinesos que hi havia! Fins i tot ens feia gràcia veure’n i saludar-los. Però ens va decepcionar la brutícia i la inseguretat que hi ha pels carrers o el transport públic (vam veure un parell de robatoris al metro en aquestes setmanes). Quan un viu a Barcelona acaba acostumat a la situació però la sensació és molt rara quan s’arriba d’una ciutat asiàtica molt segura, força neta i ben organitzada.

A Taipei no estem gent influenciats pels mitjans de comunicació i la publicitat (o bé no ho entenem o bé hi ha una diferència cultural que ens impedeix tenir interés pel tema). Al tornar a Barcelona va ser interessant poder notar com un acaba influenciat pels mitjans/publicitat sense quasi ni adonar-se’n. També vam veure com la majoria de notícies són molt «locals» (Catalunya/Espanya) i els afers més internacionals no interessen massa. A Taiwan també hi ha molta informació local (sobretot de temes polítics i la relació amb Xina) però a la vegada hi ha una major perspectiva regional i global.

Per cert, els occidentals tenim els nassos molt grans! (per això ens diuen «big noses» els Taiwanesos)

I mentrestant a Taiwan…

Mentre erem a Barceloan a Taiwan els va tocar el rebre amb el tifó més fort de la temporada, Super Typhoon Megi. Va començar al nord de les Filipines i va anar cap al sud de la Xina tot afectant part de Taiwan. A Taiwan el Megi va deixar 114cm de pluja em 48 hores a la zona de Ilan amb vents de fins a 145 km/h. Al voltant de 36 persones van morir (la majoria turistes xinesos sepultats quan una allau de terra va engollir el seu autobus)

I had to go to Europe for couple of meetings and Anna just finished her 3rd term of Chinese, so we arranged to spend almost 3 weeks in Europe. Specially for Anna it was starting to be mandatory to have an Asian break after more than 9 months at Taiwan.

There is no better way to describe this trip as an Epicurean trip :)

Epicurus (341 BCE – 270 BCE), was an ancient Greek philosopher and founder of Epicureanism. Few of his texts have survived and his philosophy is widely misunderstood and often confused with sensuous and luxurious living (confusion promulgated by Christian polemicists). I am not going to bore you with the details but I have actually been reading quite a lot about Epicurus since late 2009 and I found it very inspiring and practical in various aspects of life.

One of the key elements of Epicurean philosophy is that friends (and family by extension) are a major source of happiness, but Epicurus believed you need to see your friends on a consistent basis. Not just casually, but as much as possible. In fact, he believed that you should live with or in close quarters to your friends. . Additionally, you should never eat alone and you should eat light and healthy meals to have the perfect combination.

So, as we are not doing very well on the front of living close to our friends, we followed his wise advices and spend as much time as possible eating/drinking (with moderation) together with friends and family. It was just great :) (sorry that we did not take pictures with everybody)

We were expecting to have to answer a lot of detailed questions about our life in Taipei and Asia but it has been actually the opposite case with mostly Anna and myself asking about changes on other people life’s.

Thank to this blog, Facebook updates and few video conferences a lot of the people said to us that it was like we had never gone (we still need to decide if this is a good or a bad statement :))

Barcelona with Asian eyes

Going back home with new Asian eyes gives you a very unique perspective and you start taking pictures like a regular tourist :)

We took pictures because of the emotion of being back home and because of the interest to show to our Taiwanese friends all that we like about home: weather, unique landscapes, food, etc… basically all these little things that we can not easily enjoy at Taiwan.

Although you know very well Barcelona, acting like a tourist, you go back to enjoy your own city in ways that you can not do when you actually live there. Barcelona surprised us for being extremely multicultural and also for the small amount of Chinese people :) (even people living at Barcelona say there are a lot!). We were disappointed to see a dirty city, the rudeness of the people in the public space and the lack of security (we witnessed two robberies in the metro). You get used to it when you live there… but it is actually very awkward felling when you just arrived from a very safe, clean and decently organized Asian country.

In Taipei we are not really influenced by the mainstream media and the advertising (as we can hardly understand anything and/or there is a cultural gap). Back at home we felt how one can be very easily influenced by the media/adverts without even being aware of it. Another interesting detail is to see how «local» (Catalan/Spanish) are the news and most of the issues being discussed. At Taipei (and Asia in general) the news are include local information too, but the regional and worldwide news are more relevant than in the Spanish mainstream media.

BTW, Western noses are huge! :) (that’s why Chines people call westerners BIG NOSES)

Meanwhile in Taiwan…

During our trip there was the most powerful typhoon of the season, Super Typhoon Megi. It started in the north of Philiphines and moved towards South of China affecting also Taiwan. In Taiwan Megi dumped a record 114 centimeters of rain in Ilan county over 48 hours, had winds of 145 kph and killed around 36 people (a bus with Chinese tourist was trapped in a mudslide)
