A Taipei la icona de la ciutat des de fa alguns any és l’edifici Taipei 101 (que era el més alt del món fins fa finals del 2009). En el logo d’aquest blog també en podeu veure la silueta. Si ens veniu a visitar segur que hi acabarem anant en algún moment o altre.

L’edifici és visible de quasi tota la ciutat i en diverses de les visites en busca d’un pis per llogar era una de les qualitat que el propietari destacava. Nosaltres el podem veure des del terrat de casa.

L’Anna i jo ja hi hem anat diversos cops ja que  hi ha una de les llibreries més interessants de Taipei, un foodcourt amb molt variada oferta, un supermercat amb productes importats (Jasons Market) i s’hi celebren moltes activitats. En una de les visites vam trobar-nos amb una presentació de Ferrari i Maserati al mig del centre comercial.

Aprofitant que el 10 de Gener era un dia relativament clar, al capvespre, vam decidir pujar a l’observatori (entre les plantes 89 i 91). Cal pagar 400 NTD (uns 8 euros al canvi actual). El primer que fas és agafar l’ascensor més ràpid del món, que agafa 1010 metres/segon (60.6 km/h) per pujar fins a la planta 89 en uns 37 segons.

I es va anar fent de nit

A l’última part de la visita, es pot veure el «tuned mass damper», que és una mega bola de 730 tones suspesa de diversos cables i controlada per uns amortidors pneumàtics. La bola no es va poder pujar de cop, sino que es va pujar per peces i va ser ensamblada en la seva ubicació final. Per variar, és la més gran del món.

Per a què serveix el «damper» us preguntareu? Serveix per fer contra balanç en cas de vent fort i/o terratrèmols de manera que l’edifici no es balanceja tant. Els enginyers diuen que redueix el moviment en un 40%. Podeu veure com es va moure durant un terratrèmol al maig de l’any 2008. No m’hauria pas agradat estar allà (tot i que diuen que el Taipei 101 és el lloc més segur de tot Taiwan en cas de terratrèmol)

Com estem descobrint per aquí, en moltes de les cultures asiàtiques tenen una mascota per a cada cosa (el metro, els bombers, cadenes de menjar, etc.). Les mascotes es fan servir en el material promocional, els souvenirs i també en els fulletons informatius. En el Taipei 101 les mascotes són els «Damper Baby’s». No són especialment agraciades com a mascotes però fan la seva feina.

Queda pendent per una altre nit anar a sopar a algún dels restaurants de la planta 85 :)At Taipei, since couple of years ago, the icon of the city is the Taipei 101 (the tallest buliding in the world until late 2009). In the logo of this blog you can also see its silhouette. If you come to visit Taipei it is very likely that you will end up at Taipei 101 during your visit.

The building is visible from all over the city. In various of the visits during the flat hunting visits, the owner mentioned the nice view of Taipei 101 as one of the qualities of the flat. We can see it from the roof only.

Anna and myself have visited Taipei 101 several times already as it contains one of the largest bookshops in Taipei, a foodcourt with a lot of choices, a supermarket for foreigners (Jasons Market) and a lot of activities take place inside it. In one of the visits we enjoyed a press event from Ferrari and Maserati.

As it was a clear day, on January 10th, right before the sunset we decided to visit the observatory (between floors 89 and 91). 400 NTD (around 8 euros) must be paid. The first step is to take the fastest elevator in the world, that goes as fast as 1010 metres/second (60.6 km/h) to reach floor 89 in barely 37 seconds.

To reach the floor 91 (outdoor observatory, open only when weather conditions are good) you need to use the emergency stairs.

The last part of the visit is to see the «tuned mass damper», a mega steel ball of 730 tons. Eight steel cables form a sling to support the ball, while eight viscous dampers act like shock absorbers when the sphere shifts. As you can imagine, it is the biggest in the world.

What’s the use of this tuned mass damper, you might ask? It acts like a giant pendulum to counteract the building’s movement reducing sway due to wind by 30 to 40 percent. On the video below you can see how it moved during an earthquake on 2008. I would not have enjoyed the experience… (but everybody claims that Taipei 101 is the safest place to be during an earthquake)

As we are discovering here, in Asian cultures they love to have a mascot for everything (the metro, the firemen, food chains, the bank, etc.). The mascot is present on all promotional material, souvenirs and educational leaflets. Taipei 101 mascots are «Damper Baby’s». I would not claim that this is a very nice mascot, but it probably does its job well enough.

In the future we will visit Taipei 101 again to enjoy one of its restaurants at 85th floor :)
